Big Central Gridiron’s JV Round-Up – Mid-Season 2023

Colonia’s JV Now 7-0 After Win over Perth Amboy on Monday

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – On Monday, Big Central Gridiron covered three different JV contests around the Big Central Conference.  First, BCG traveled to Rahway River Park to take in the United Gold JV contest between the Indians and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Afterward, BCG headed over to Brenner Family Field to see St. Joseph’s battle Edison in a BCC JV Crossover.  Finally, Big Central Gridiron drove out to Noonan Field in Hillsborough to watch the JV Raiders battle Hunterdon Central in a Big Central Conference American Silver Division JV clash.

In addition, BCG received results from several other Big Central Conference JV contests.  Below are the results we had from some of Monday’s JV action:

  • St. Thomas Aquinas 20 – Rahway 6
  • St. Joseph’s 27 – Edison 0
  • Hillsborough 31 – Hunterdon Central 6
  • Colonia 33 – Perth Amboy 12
  • Belvidere 28 – Manville 0
  • Cranford 31 – Scotch Plains 0

St. Thomas Aquinas led 7-0 at the half against Rahway before throwing a third-quarter interception that was returned for a touchdown.  The Trojans prevented the JV Indians from adding a two-point conversion to maintain a 7-6 lead.  Aquinas then added a third-quarter TD run and a fourth-quarter TD reception while also intercepting four passes to come away with the two-score win.  The win improved the JV Trojans record to 3-1.

St. Joseph’s had just scored and added an extra point for a 7-0 lead when we arrived for its game against Edison.  The Falcons then forced a fumble and recovered in Edison territory.  St. Joe’s then converted that turnover into points with a TD run for a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.  The JV Falcons then added TD passes in the second and third quarters while intercepting a pass in the closing moments to preserve the 27-0 shutout.

Hillsborough was already in control with an 18-0 halftime lead when BCG arrived for the contest at Noonan Field.  Hunterdon Central showed some signs of life by recovering a fumble on the second-half kickoff and then driving down the field for an early third-quarter score that closed the gap to 18-6.  The JV Raiders would not let Hunterdon Central get any closer though.  Hillsborough took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field for a score on a TD run off a toss to the left.

The Junior Red Devils did manage to move the ball well in the second half.  However, its last two scoring drives of the game were halted by interceptions in the Red Zone by Hillsborough.  The Junior Raiders’ running game was also in high gear as it produced the game’s final score after being backed up by a penalty.  The victory improved Hillsborough’s JV record to 2-2.

In other games, Colonia improved to 7-0 on the season with a 33-12 victory over Perth Amboy on Monday.  The Junior Patriots have beaten the likes of Sayreville, Linden, and Woodbridge en route to its undefeated season.  In another Big Central Conference United Gold Division contest, Cranford continued to roll with a 31-0 victory over Scotch Plains-Fanwood at Memorial Field in Cranford.

The Cougars, which handed St. Thomas Aquinas its only loss of the season back on September 25th (3-0), improved to 5-1 with the victory.  Aquinas has outscored its opponents 42-21 so far this season.  In small school action, Belvidere’s JV cruised past Manville in a 28-0 shutout to improve to 2-1 on the season.
