Somerville Upends Hillsborough and Woodbridge Nips Old Bridge in Opening Night Thrillers
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – On Thursday, the first day of Week 0, or opening week high school football action took place around the Big Central Conference as well as the rest of the Garden State. Five of the twelve games played were decided by 8 points or less. Three of those games were decided by a point.
Colonia knocked off Sayreville on the road in a clash of Middlesex County schools. Hoops standout, Dylan Chiera has taken the helm at QB for the Patriots and immediately made an impact with a 12-yard TD run to defeat the Bombers.
Woodbridge also registered a road win by holding off a late fourth-quarter comeback attempt by Old Bridge. Derek Anderson led the way for the Barrons in Joe Goerge’s coaching debut by scoring four TDs including three through the air.
Somerville made a statement with a hard-fought win over neighborhood rival Hillsborough at Brooks Field. The Pioneers, which moved down from the American Gold to the Liberty Silver for the 2024 season, knocked off the 13th-ranked Raiders according to nj.com thanks to two first-quarter scores from Terrell Mitchell and a Brenden Pacheco TD pass to Brady Scheier.
