The Franklin Township Warriors opened the season on the right foot with a come-from-behind 26-22 victory over Trenton in non-conference action on Friday night.

Elizabeth Holds Off Linden while Hillside Rolls Past Snyder

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – On Friday, the second day of Week 0, or opening week high school football action took place around the Big Central Conference as well as the rest of the Garden State. After some close games on Thursday, there were many lopsided contests on Friday. Only three of the 15 games played were decided by 7 points or less with four of the games being shutouts.

Elizabeth gave up the opening score before responding with 28 unanswered points to build up a 28-6 lead in the third quarter against Linden. Then, the Minutemen had to hold on as Linden rallied to pull within a touchdown in the fourth. Jamad Lyles came up with the huge interception to preserve Elizabeth’s 35-28 victory.

Meanwhile, in West Orange, Hillside pulled away from a 20-20 tie at halftime with three unanswered scores in the second half to defeat Snyder of Jersey City, 42-20 in day two action at the 2024 Mountaineer Classic. The Comets got 5 of their 6 touchdowns on the ground as Mitchell Jenkins rushed 13 times for 170 yards and 4 scores while Sean Caldwell added another 18 carries for 93 yards and a score.

In a wild one down in Lawrenceville, Notre Dame held off a late rally by Bridgewater-Raritan for a 40-38 victory. The only other close game involved Franklin and Trenton. In a back-and-forth game that only saw one score in the second half, the Warriors got a 50-yard TD run from Dubem Kawah in the fourth quarter to edge Trenton, 26-22. Amir Glover helped put Franklin within two with a 86-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.
