Vikings Defeat Raiders for the First Time Since 2017
NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – On Thursday night, South Brunswick pulled off an early season shocker with a 30-21 road victory at arch-rival North Brunswick. The Raiders, which were ranked in the pre-season Top 10 in many area polls, had won five straight against the Vikings coming into the contest.
North Brunswick appeared to have the game under control at one point in the second quarter. The Raiders pulled away from a 7-7 first-period tie with two scoring runs by Jahir Dawud to take a 21-7 lead with a little more than eight and a half minutes remaining in the first half. South Brunswick would surge the rest of the way with 23 unanswered points for the win.
In a span of a little more than two and a half minutes, South Brunswick erased the two-score deficit with a 90-yard interception return by Dawson Boateng and an 8-yard TD run by Julian Williams to knot the game at 21-21 with just over two and a half minutes to play in the second quarter. The score remained that way until about 9:30 to play in the game when the Vikes got a safety. Boateng then followed up with another defensive score by recovering a fumble and returning it 50 yards.
North Brunswick leads the all-time series 27-21-1. South Brunswick won two of the first three meetings between the two schools. Then, the Raiders took control of the series with a 14-game winning streak from 1978 to 1992. The Vikings climbed back into the series by winning 17 of the next 25 meetings including eight straight from 2010 to 2017. North Brunswick and South Brunswick didn’t play in 1989 and 2018. Both teams tied in 1993 (14-14). Check out the Raiders-Vikings rivalry at a glance.
