Thirtieth Anniversary of CJ Group 2 Champion Pioneers
The 2024 season marks the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Somerville Pioneers football team. This tearm was recently honored when Somerville opened its season with a 21-20 victory over Hillsborough in Week 0. This edition of the Somerville Pioneers completed one of the biggest turnarounds in school history.
Going from a winless 0-9 in 1993, the Pioneers not only finished 8-3 overall but also won the Raritan Division of the Skyland Conference with a 4-0 mark and the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 2 Championship. The sectional crown was the first for the Pioneers since 1986. Take a look at the 1994 Somerville Pioneers season below.

NOTE: Back in 1994, the format for the state playoffs was much different. There wasn’t a group state champion. There wasn’t even a regional championship. Only four teams qualified per section. The way teams qualified for the state tournament was also different. The 1994 season was the first time since 1981 that the NJSIAA football state championship games were played at Giants Stadium.
