Union vs. Westfield – Rivalry at a Glance

On Friday night, Westfield edged Union 14-6 on the road. It was the second straight win for the Blue Devils after losing their season opener to Phillipsburg. Westfield’s win was also the second in the last three years versus Union. The Farmers still lead the series 33-29.

Blue Devils Defeat Farmers for 2nd Time in 3 Years

UNION, NJ – On Friday night, Union and Westfield met in a Big Central Conference American Gold match-up at Union High School. The Blue Devils got a stiff test from a Farmers team still searching for its first win of 2024. Westfield still managed to come away with a hard-fought, 14-6 victory. It was the 62nd meeting between the two schools.

Junior QB Cole Weidler led the Blue Devils to victory with two TD passes. Senior wideout Enzo Ferrero and senior tight-end, Colin Coyle each caught a TD pass. Ferrero hauled in 6 receptions for 65 yards, or an average of nearly 11 yards per reception. Union rushed for over 250 yards in the game. David Gardiner ran for 152 yards and a TD, and an average of 5.6 yards per carry. Senior QB O’Malley King rushed for over 100 yards and an average of 12.9 yards per rush.

Westfield needed to overcome a 2nd quarter deficit to win this year’s edition of the rivalry. After a scoreless first quarter, Union struck first for a 6-0 lead on a two yard TD run by David Gardiner. The Blue Devils took the lead for good when Fiedler connected with wideout Enzo Ferrero for a 33 yard score and a 7-6 halftime lead.

The Blue Devils put the game away with a third quarter score. Weidler connected with Coyle on a 14 yard TD pass to go up 14-6. Westfield hung on for the eight point victory to improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Central Conference’s American Gold Division. Union dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in divisional play. 

The rivalry has been fairly even with Union still holding a 33-29 edge in the series. The Blue Devils won 15 of the first 19 meetings. Union then won 17 in a row from 1981’s playoff game between the two schools until 1997. Westfield has won two of the last three meetings.  Westfield defeated Union two years ago on September 10, 2022. Union won last year’s meeting (37-7).
