Another Week of Unsettled Weather Brings Threat of Rain for Week 4
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Last week’s unsettled weather pattern cleared up just in time for the Week 3 schedule of BCC games. This week’s games may not be as fortunate. Skies have remained unsettled for much of the past several days. There has been some rain in the form of showers across the Garden State, but nothing much.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, there was a bit of a tug-of-war between the sun and clouds with the sun winning out on Tuesday and the clouds winning out on Wednesday. Showers and some storms moved through much of New Jersey on Thursday morning. The showers and possible storms are expected to linger around until about mid-afternoon.
While there has been a lot in the way of clouds, there hasn’t been a lot in the way of rain. Only 0.06 of an inch of rain has fallen over the past 24 hours here at Greg’s Weather Center in South Plainfield, NJ. So, we’ve only doubled the rainfall total for September 2024 with 0.12 of an inch of rain has fallen for the month. Before the light rain that fell at GWC overnight Wednesday and early Thursday, there had been only 1.55 inches of rain over 44 days including 16 days with no measurable rainfall.
The first official day of fall was on Sunday. So, the possibility of another 80-degree-plus day is becoming less and less likely. To date, there have been 92 days of 80-degree-plus temperatures at GWC in South Plainfield. However, the temperatures have been much lower this week. Sunday was the best day temperature-wise with a high of 75. The rest of the week only saw temperatures hovering in the upper 50s and 60s. The diurnal temperature range has averaged only about 8 degrees from Monday to Wednesday.
Big Central Gridiron will be down in Monroe Township on Friday night to take in the BCC Crossover contest between Monroe and J.F. Kennedy. Conditions at kickoff are expected to be overcast with a 50 percent chance of showers. The temperature will be going below 70 after a high in the afternoon in the low 70s. Then, on Saturday afternoon, skies will be overcast again with a 30 percent chance of rain and a high temperature near 75 degrees at kickoff in Hillside’s Woodfield Stadium, where the hometown Comets will be playing Somerville.
Looking at the tropics, the disturbance that was mentioned in last week’s weather report has become a Category Two Hurricane. As of the morning advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Helene has 105 mph winds with a minimum central pressure of 960 millibars or 28.35 inches. The storm is forecast to make landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida’s West Coast as a major hurricane. It is also expected to bring a storm surge of 15 to 20 feet, and torrential rains further inland in the Tennessee Valley.
