Summit vs. Cranford – Rivalry at a Glance

With its 27-22 victory over Summit in the opening round of the 2024 NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2 Group 3 State Playoffs back on November 1st, the Cranford Cougars avenged a regular season loss at Tatlock Field. Cranford has won 8 of the last 11 meetings with the Hilltoppers. Summit still leads the all-time series 18-10.

Cranford Avenges Regular Season Loss with Playoff Win

CRANFORD, NJ – On Friday, November 1st, the Hilltoppers of Summit traveled the short journey to Memorial Field to take on the Cranford Cougars in the first playoff edition of this rivalry between the two schools. Summit had won two straight including a regular season meeting on September 28th (21-7) at Tatlock Field. However, Cranford avenged the loss with a 27-22 win in the opening round of the North Jersey Section 2 Group 3 State Tournament.

Cranford, which finished 2nd to Summit in the BCC’s United Gold Standings this season, scored 21 of its 27 points in the first quarter of its playoff match-up with Summit. The Hilltoppers responded with the only points of the second with a TD and a two-point conversion all courtesy of sophomore Gavin Schnall for a 22-21 halftime lead. Cougar senior QB Tyler Veltre put Cranford up for good with a one-yard plunge in the third quarter.

Cranford and Summit combined for 35 of the 49 points in the game in the opening quarter. Veltre led the way for the Cougars with two TD passes in addition to the go-ahead scoring run in the third. Senior Dylan Jones had the other score for the winners. Oscar Marx led Summit in a losing cause with a 60-yard TD run and a 73-yard TD reception.

Summit leads the all-time series 18-10. The two teams have met every year since 2009 except for the 2020 season. Summit won the first-ever meeting in 1920 (34-0). Summit won 15 of the first 17 meetings from 1920 to 2013. The two schools didn’t play from 1921 to 1982. Cranford won its first game in this series back in 1988 (7-0).
