Potent Coastal Storm Brings Much-Needed Rain and Even Snow

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – State Semifinal Friday is here around Big Central Country and one of the big questions is what will the weather be like for the two NJSIAA state semifinals/regional finals involving BCC schools.  There have been a lot of changes in the weather over the past 48 hours alone.  After enduring a period with only 2.34 inches since August 9th (103 days), a major storm gave Central Jersey its most significant rainfall in three months.

It started with a bit of a bang with a couple of rumbles of thunder on Thursday morning.  The rain began to fall in earnest with 0.02 of an inch of rain recorded at Greg’s Weather Center in South Plainfield, NJ shortly after midnight.  The rain continued for much of the morning before a break during the afternoon.  Rainfall returned during the evening.  At the time of this report, GWC received 1.69 inches of rain from the storm.

The rainfall from this latest storm was the highest since August 18th (96 days).  The storm brought almost three-quarters of the amount of rainfall that fell from August 9th to Wednesday.  It brought an end to the fire restrictions throughout the Garden State.  It will not bring an end to the drought, which is now extreme for more of South Jersey.  Before this storm, Middlesex County needed 14 to 16 inches of rain over the next few months to end the drought.

The storm brought a wide variety of weather to New Jersey.  Here at GWC, there was mostly a cold rain with an occasional mix of wet snow.  No accumulation though.  However, further north and west more significant snowfall fell. At High Point in Sussex County, named for being the highest location in New Jersey at 1,800 feet, there were 20 inches of snow according to North Jersey Weather Observers.

Take a look below at the current conditions and the weather forecasts around Central Jersey as of the time of this report.
