Improved Defense Fuels Bridgewater-Raritan’s Rise

The 2025 Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers are 3-0 and atop the North Jersey Group 5 rankings thanks to improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

Fewer Points Allowed Keys Panthers’ Strong Start

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – At the beginning of this week, the latest NJSIAA group rankings came out, and the Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers are at the top of the North Jersey Group 5 Supersection with a 3-0 record and a UPR of 1.

A year ago, the Panthers had only three wins for the entire regular season and finished with a 4-7 record.  Improved defense has fueled Bridgewater-Raritan’s rise.  Fewer points allowed over their first three games has helped fuel the Panthers’ strong start.

Highlights from Phillipsburg’s win over Bridgewater-Raritan at Basilone Field in Bridgewater on October 25, 2024.

In 2024, Bridgewater-Raritan averaged 24.5 points per game on offense, which ranked 21st in the Big Central Conference.  The Panthers, which scored 269 total points a year ago, tied with Plainfield in scoring.

The Panthers were fourth in the highly competitive BCC’s American Silver Division against the likes of Phillipsburg, Ridge, and Hillsborough, which averaged at least 29 points per game.  Playing the likes of the Stateliners, Red Devils, and Raiders also put a huge dent in Bridgewater-Raritan’s defensive numbers.

Potent offenses in the highly competitive BCC’s American Silver Division left their mark on Bridgewater-Raritan’s defense in 2024.

In addition, the Panthers played a tough out-of-division schedule that included the likes of Notre Dame, Piscataway, Morris Knolls, Elizabeth, and Westfield during the regular season and Irvington and Union City in the playoffs.

Over the course of its 11-game season last year, Bridgewater-Raritan’s defense yielded 428 total points, or an average of just under 39 points per contest.  The points allowed by the Panthers ranked at the bottom of the BCC in 2024.  With a veteran group returning coupled with the addition of transfer Jahmier Black, expectations are high in Bridgewater, but an improved defense will be a huge key.

A huge key to Bridgewater-Raritan’s Fast Start has been allowing fewer points per game on defense.

An improved defense has been evident in the Panthers’ solid start.  Over the first three games of the 2025 season, Bridgewater-Raritan has reduced its points allowed per game by nearly 50%.  Over the first three games of the 2024 season, Bridgewater yielded a total of 122 points, or an average of 40.7 points per game.  During the same period this year, the Panthers have only given up a total of 68 points, or 22.7 points per contest.  Last season, Bridgewater-Raritan was 1-2 after its first three games.  This year, the Panthers are undefeated.

The Panthers, like all of the teams in the Big Central Conference’s American Silver Division, have a potent offense with a lot of weapons.  With a stronger defense in 2025, Bridgewater-Raritan has managed to be much more successful while not scoring as much.  A year ago, Bridgewater-Raritan scored an average of 34.3 points per game in its first three games.  This season, the Panthers have averaged slightly less with 32 points per game.

Improved defense is making life easier for the 2025 Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers.

“Offense wins games, but defense wins championships” is a phrase that you will often hear when it comes to football.  The early returns on Bridgewater-Raritan’s 2025 campaign have been a testament to that.  In addition, the strength of the Panthers’ schedule was instrumental in helping them qualify for the North Jersey Section 2 Group 5 playoffs last season

So far this season, an improved defense has helped the Panthers overcome a very tough out-of-division schedule to start at 3-0 and claim the top spot in its region. Now the real work begins.  On Friday night, Bridgewater-Raritan hosts Hunterdon Central at Basilone Field in Bridgewater in the first BCC American Silver contest of 2025 for the Panthers.  Last year, Bridgewater got its only division win at the hands of the Red Devils at Stewart Field in Flemington.

The Panthers’ playoff hopes will get a strong boost with improved play within their division.  Bridgewater-Raritan will need to get wins over the big three of Hillsborough, Phillipsburg, and Ridge to have a chance to win the BCC American Silver and make a deep run in Group 5 come late October and November.  An improved defense gives the Panthers a good chance to do both.
