New Jersey Under a Marginal Risk for Severe Weather Including Tornadoes

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Fall officially began earlier this week, but there are still signs that summer is trying to hang on.  Over the past two weeks, there have been seven days with high temperatures in the 80s.  Showers and thunderstorms have been popping up around the Garden State since Tuesday.  The Atlantic Tropics have begun to stir again after an unusual lull during peak season.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, has placed New Jersey under a marginal risk for severe weather on Thursday.  Among the risk is the threat of tornadoes.  Just before noon, the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Sullivan County in New York.  Following some overnight rainfall, skies remained cloudy with some morning fog.  Before the emergence of showers and storms on Tuesday, conditions had been quite dry.

Since the four consecutive days of rain that were highlighted by the last severe weather episode on September 6th, there had been only one day of measurable rainfall at Greg’s Weather Center in South Plainfield, NJ.  Only 0.14 of an inch of rain fell at GWC on September 17th.  The total rainfall for September 2025 has been 1.69 inches as of Wednesday afternoon.  

Following the torrential rains of July 14th that produced significant flash flooding across Northwestern Middlesex County, Northeastern Somerset County, and Southwestern Union County, there have been 54 days without measurable rainfall at GWC.  Only 4.01 inches of rain have fallen in Northwestern Middlesex County over the last 71 days.  The severe storms on July 14th produced 5.53 inches alone.

Week 4 action around the Big Central Conference kicks off on Thursday night with a Freedom Gold Division clash between Highland Park and Spotswood at Chargers Stadium in Spotswood.  Kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM.  The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, is calling for showers and thunderstorms mainly before 5:00 PM, but there is still a significant chance of showers and storms during the course of the game.  

Anywhere from a tenth to a quarter of an inch is likely, with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.  The chance of rain is 80 percent.  Afternoon high is expected to be around 80 degrees.  The temperature at game time is still expected to be in the mid-70s before cooling down to 65 overnight.  Rain is expected to linger into Friday, along with some morning fog, before clearing out in the afternoon.  

The forecast for Friday night’s BCC Patriot Gold clash between Voorhees and Delaware Valley at Tap Webb Memorial Field in Frenchtown, NJ, is partly sunny skies with a slight Northwest wind developing in the afternoon, with a high of around 80 degrees.  Conditions at kickoff are expected to be mostly cloudy with light northwest winds and temperatures in the low 70s en route to an overnight low of 59.
