Notable BCC Schools Left Out of Playoffs

Senior QB Se’mir Tolbert-Brimage and the Spotswood Chargers’ one-point loss at Jonathan Dayton was the only regular-season blemish going into the state cutoff last Saturday. Spotswood was one of several notable BCC schools that were left out of the playoffs this year.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – With the state playoffs getting underway tonight, Big Central Gridiron took a look at the notable Big Central Conference teams that were left out. Spotswood and Jonathan Dayton were among the BCC schools on the outside looking in this post-season.

Spotswood (8-2) – The Chargers won a share of the BCC’s Freedom Gold Division with David Brearley. Spotswood’s only loss was a 20-19 heartbreaker to Jonathan Dayton in Springfield on October 10th. Dayton also didn’t qualify after falling to Brearley (10-7) on the final day of the regular season.

Jonathan Dayton (7-2) – Defeated Spotswood (20-19) and lost to Brearley (10-7).  Also lost to Highland Park in Week 2 (26-14).  Best season since 2010. Finished 2nd in the BCC Freedom Gold.

J.F. Kennedy (6-4) – Lost to Governor Livingston (36-28 in OT), South Plainfield (42-14), and Voorhees (43-13).

Belvidere (5-4) – Three of its four losses by a combined total of 13 points, including a 28-27 loss at Bound Brook and a 17-11 loss at home to Jonathan Dayton in triple-overtime.  The Seaters also battled through key injuries, including standout Elijah White. Bound Brook qualified in CJ Group 1.

Delaware Valley (6-4) – Lost to Bernards (43-7), Voorhees (21-12), A.L. Johnson (21-19), and New Providence (32-7).

South Plainfield (6-4) – Lost to Governor Livingston (12-9), Delaware Valley (26-0), Cranford (35-14), and Bernards (7-0).

Governor Livingston (4-5) – Won the BCC United Silver Division.  Lost four of its five games to playoff teams:  New Providence, A.L. Johnson, Voorhees, and Bernards.  Two of those four losses were by a total of 8 points:  A.L. Johnson (21-20 in OT) and Voorhees (21-14).

Hunterdon Central (4-5) – Lost its last three games to Ridge (28-7), Old Bridge (45-29), and Hillsborough (33-8).  All three schools qualified for the state playoffs.  

South Brunswick (4-6) – Finished third in BCC National Gold.  Lost to Robbinsville (41-34 in OT), Watchung Hills (20-15), and Union (22-13).  

Franklin (5-4) – Finished third in BCC National Silver.  Lost to Hammonton (24-14), St. Thomas Aquinas (57-45), Plainfield (34-8), and Sayreville (37-28).  Two of the teams qualified.  Aquinas’ playoff fate determined next weekend.

Metuchen (5-4) – Won four straight.  Defeated David Brearley (27-9).  Four losses to Delaware Valley (27-13), Roselle (18-12), New Providence (41-6), and A.L. Johnson (14-7).  Two losses to playoff teams and two by one score.  Metuchen was 7-3 a year ago and also didn’t qualify.
