Tigers and Canucks Battle It Out for the Mayor’s Trophy on Friday Evening

NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Week 1 action continues with a complete ledger of Friday night games around the Big Central Conference.  Among these contests is the annual rivalry game between North Plainfield and South Plainfield, which will take place at Krausche Field.

Both teams are entering this contest from opposite ends of the spectrum.  North Plainfield won its season opener, 7-0 over Orange of the Super Essex Conference thanks to a last second touchdown reception by Anthony Costello.  Meanwhile, South Plainfield is coming off a 40-21 loss at Somerville.

The two teams are no longer facing each other as a part of BCC United Silver Division play.  While the Tigers remain in the division, the Canucks moved down with New Brunswick to the Patriot Gold Division.  Now, North Plainfield will have to contend with foes such as Delaware Valley, Hillside, and Voorhees.  South Plainfield will now have to deal with Bernards as well as Governor Livingston and J.F. Kennedy.

In addition to a new divisional home in the BCC’s Patriot Gold, North Plainfield has a new head coach.  Derrick Eatman stepped down earlier this summer, and was replaced by Steven Brown.  Bill Hamilton remains the skipper at South Plainfield, where he is now in his sixth season.  Hamilton previously served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, when Phlip McGuane was Tigers’ head coach.

Last season, South Plainfield finished 6-4 overall, including a 3-1 mark in the BCC’s United Silver Division.  SPHS finished the season on a solid note with a regional crossover victory at Spotswood (35-28).  The Tigers finished second to Governor Livingston a year ago, and are looking to contend for division honors this year.   They will likely battle it out with Bernards and Governor Livingston with the Mountaineers being the favorite to win the title.

Meanwhile, North Plainfield finished fourth in the BCC United Silver in 2025 en route to a 3-6 overall record.  The Canucks finished the season on a positive note with a 43-18 win at Highland Park in a regional crossover contest.  NPHS will have its work cut out for them once divisional play begins with familiar foes such as Delaware Valley, Hillside, and Voorhees from its Mid-State 38 days in the way to a Patriot Gold division crown.

Watch highlights from the action in North Plainfield’s 28-14 victory over South Plainfield on Thanksgiving Day 2015.

In 2025, South Plainfield averaged 21.2 points per game, while only giving up 15.1 per contest.  By contrast, North Plainfield scored 15.2 points per game, while yielding 24.2 points per contest.  The Tigers averaged 288.4 yards per game on offense, including 244.8 yards on the ground.  On the other hand, North Plainfield averaged 203.8 yards per game, including 146.1 yards on the ground.  Entering the season, South Plainfield’s defensive line ranks in the top five in the BCC according to 4QB Elite.

Outlook:  South Plainfield ran into one of the elite teams in the Big Central Conference in Somerville last week.  The Pioneers prolific offense led by Dylan Boehm and Justin Bowen proved to be too much for the Tigers’ much heralded defensive line.  However, the Tigers defense led by basketball standout, Aiden Noblecilla, should be able to rebound tonight.  The Canucks’ defense pitched a shutout last week, and will be looking to build off of that and Costello’s game winning reception to pull off the upset.  SPHS has recently turned the corner in this rivalry with four straight victories.  NPHS still holds the all-time series lead at 31-20-1.
